The Global Beef Breed The American Brahman was the first beef breed developed in the United States, and has played an important role world-wide. American Brahman genetics are sought after by cattlemen on every continent, and are noted for enduring famine, insect pests, diseases and extreme temperature fluctuations all while efficiently producing beef and/or milk. They have the ability to survive and thrive where other breeds cannot. The American Brahman, developed from four main Indian Bos indicus breeds, has improved beef production in every country that it has been introduced. It is appropriately termed the "Global Beef Breed." |

The group was welcomed by President of ASOPROLPAZ, Margarita Restrepo, and Brahman producer, Gerardo Ariza, upon arrival. Everyone travelled by car to Paz de Ariporo where the 2nd Festival Ganadero was to take place. The following morning about 100 local cattlemen gathered to attend the day long event which began with a milking competition including three local producers. All participants were awarded ABBA bandanas and souvenirs. The program kicked off with a warm welcome from Department of Casanare Secretary of Agriculture, Armando Camargo. Mr. Hugo Roberto Huertas, representative of FEDEGAN, and was followed by a presentation on the importance of uniting and working together for the improvement of beef and milk production in the region. The ABBA’s Recording Secretary, Armelinda Ibarra, also welcomed attendees on behalf of the American Brahman Breeders Association, and conducted an overview of the ABBA and its services. After her presentation, Armelinda presented Dr. David Riley, who also gave his presentation in Spanish on two advantages of utilizing Brahman genetics, “Adaptation to Conditions in the Tropics” and “Hybrid Vigor When Crossing With Brahmans.” With the excitement of having a family member of the J.D. Hudgins, Inc., present at the seminar, Lana Jo Forgason-Stanley was asked to give an impromptu presentation on the early importations of cattle into the U.S. and the development of the American Brahman, as well as to discuss her connection with J.D. Hudgins, Inc. She was also asked about the acquisition of the “Manso” bull. Shirley Acedo of Tuscany Farms was also asked to give a brief presentation on her 23 years of experience in working in the dairy business. Many questions followed, with the majority of questions in the area of milk production and basic cattle management practices. A typical llanero style lunch, sponsored by the ABBA, was served after presentations were given. During the meal, the local school band performed several typical Colombian and American melodys followed by a folkloric dance performance. That evening everyone traveled via bus to a nearby ranch owned by Mr. Giovanni Roa Chaparror. Mr. Roa and his family welcomed everyone, gave a brief history of their ranch and rotation system, which was followed by an evening meal. The program continued the next day in Hato Corozal, where the ABBA hosted the second educational program at a ranch where a new group of about 90 local producers gathered. The mayor of the nearby city and several other city officials were present to give a welcome address. The ABBA presentations followed, with many questions and discussions regarding management practices and crossbreeding for dual purpose production. That evening, the U.S. delegation traveled to tour the Arauca River which borders the departments of Hato Corozal and Arauca. They also visited a nearby horse and cattle ranch owned by Nelson Gacharna. On the final day, the delegation traveled back to Yopal to host the third round of presentations at the ranch of Mr. Roberto Valenzuela. There were about 45 cattlemen in attendance from the Yopal and Bogota areas including Mr. Diego Zambrano, Technical Director of ASOCEBU. After a steak lunch, Mr. Valenzuela gave a presentation of his cattle and breeding program. He presented a great herd of cattle consisting of a U.S. semen and embryos base. XVI World Brahman Congress - Panama City, Panama The XVI World Brahman Congress was held July 1 – 8, 2012 in Panama City, Panama. A week of collaboration amongst the world’s Brahman enthusiasts was the groundwork for this premier international event, which also featured Brahman-based scientific conferences, a two day cattle show, welcome and closing celebrations and tourist visits to local ranches and the Panama Canal. A 96 member delegation representing the American Brahman Breeders Association (ABBA) attended the week-long event. Not only did the World Brahman Congress provide a forum for American breeders to promote and market their herds on an international level, it was also a triumph to American Brahman genetics, as each of the show champions in both the red and grey divisions, were sired by ABBA registered bulls. The ABBA is proud to be able to aid its members in the worldwide dissemination and distribution of top quality genetics that are capable of producing champions globally. Not only do these genetics stand out in the show ring, they are also the basis for the American Brahman’s success in tropic and sub-tropic climates, and for their No. 1 rank in feed efficiency, heat tolerance and hybrid vigor. The World Brahman Congress is a great opportunity for American breeders to experience the value of Brahman cattle across the globe as well as to become acquainted with other international Brahman breeders and potential clients. If you were unable to attend this year’s event, the next World Brahman Congress will be held in September of 2014 in South Africa.
