AJBA Holds Field Day in Louisiana The American Junior Brahman Association in conjunction with the Louisiana Brahman Association held a field day in New Roads, LA on May 1, 2010. Over 130 AJBA members and families attended the event that helped better prepare them for the upcoming All American National Junior Brahman Show. The day began with a welcome by Brooke Prather, AJBA President; Eli Graham, LJBA President; Jeff Smith of Smith Brahmans, Field Day Host; Louis Dooley, LBA President & Chris Shivers, ABBA Executive Vice President. The AJBA Directors then led the group in some fun ice breakers so everyone could have an opportunity to meet and learn more about other members. After a drawing for some really nice door prizes the attendees were broken into age groups for a workshop on public speaking. Brooke Prather, Margo Kahla and Rachel Williams led these and did an outstanding job giving pointers on how to give a good speech as well as gave the participants some ideas of where to find information on this years All American speech topics. Beatriz Jimenez then gave a great presentation on reproduction and covered both basic reproduction techniques as well as embryo transfer. The highlight for many of the participants was the opportunity to look at some embryos under the microscope. After some more door prize drawings, Jeffrey Richard gave a showmanship demonstration and concluded by giving one on one help to anyone who was interested. The participants and their families then enjoyed a delicious Cajun Style Beef lunch prepared by Smith Brahmans. Following the lunch the participants were able to showcase what they had learned in the showmanship demonstration by participating in a showmanship contest. This was judged by Jeff Richard and awards were given to the winners. To conclude the days activities, Dr. Tommy Shields of McNeese State University gave a carcass ultrasound demonstration. Everyone really enjoyed this and had plenty of questions regarding this technology. Everyone in attendance had a great time, learned a lot and took home a door prize. We greatly appreciate each of the speakers for their time and expertise, Smith Brahmans for hosting the event and the Louisiana Brahman Association for their efforts. |
